The NRA Has Jumped The Shark

I was just sitting here this evening surfing the web. The wife took over the big hdtv this evening to watch some two hour Greys Anatomy special and since i would rather have a glass rod shoved up into my private area and hit with a hammer than watch that drivel my choices are surf or continue reading the new Christopher Hitchens novel. Which by the way i am really enjoying the book, but i need a break. So it's in front of my laptop I sit.
I went to Yahoo to check some mail and read some headlines when I came across a story about the NRA opposing a bill aimed at stopping terrorist suspects from purchasing guns. The first thing I mumbled to myself was"terrorists can buy guns?". My second thought was why would ANYONE be opposed to stopping the bad guys from buying weapons that they can and probably will use to kill us one day? My next thought was well this has to be more misrepresentation of facts by the AP. Not to say that the AP would ever bend the truth for a story mind you. So I went to the NRA website and sure enough the story was accurate. Simply Amazing!
I am not a gun owner but i am not against gun ownership. In fact my son owns several and is an avid hunter but the NRA argument crosses the line. Their argument of course is constitutional in nature if you take the guns away from the terrorists it's only a hop skip and a jump to the government stepping in and taking all the guns. Like I said I am a gun rights supporter and a believer of our constitution but give me a break. The paranoia at the NRA must be rampant. The second argument is one of due process, basically EVERYONE is innocent until proven guilty. Just because they may be terrorist suspects doesn't make them actual terrorists so until they actually buy the gun and use it to commit a terrorist act they have the right to buy the gun to commit the terrorist act. Are you following the logic. Me neither.
This is the same logic used by then CIA director George Tenent before 9/11. He new terrorist suspects were here in the US taking pilot training at a flight school but did nothing about it because they weren't doing anything illegal. How did that work out for us?
It's sad to say but in alot of ways todays America is not the same as the one i grew up in and thats a shame but the fact is 9/11 changed everything. Some of those changes are not going to be liked but something has to give to keep us safe. If the government feels the need to look at my phone records to see if i'm ordering a pizza from a cave in Pakistan than so be it. And if the government feels it's safer to deny certain people the "right" to bear arms because they are on a government terrorist list than that is something I think we should all be willing to live with.
